Random Thoughts

OK, I haven’t posted in quite a while. Partly because I haven’t been traveling much so no new brewpubs. But also just out of lack of inspiration. But today I feel like talking.

The one new beer place I’ve found is not a brewpub but an English pub. It’s called ‘The Pub’ and it’s in Columbus, Ohio.  It’s a really nice place with a great beer selection. They seem to specialize in English/Scottish beers but have a pretty good selection of others.  They have a nice Pub food menu with a few interesting additions.  I had a shepherds Pie that left a little to be desired but I plan to give them another try. The atmosphere was pleasant and pub like. The wait staff seemed friendly and attentive. All in all, a nice place and worth checking out if you’re ever in the area.  It’s owned by The Tavern Group who have several other ‘The Pubs’ and some other  places. I believe at one time they had a Pub in the Cincinnati Airport that was one of my favorites.

On another note it recently became much easier to ship beer into Tennessee. There were some vendors that would do it but many would not.  I mention this because I just found a great place to order beer from. It’s called HalfTime Beverage.  They have an extensive beer list and will ship anything from a single to a case.  You can order 24 singles at a time if you want and the best deal for shipping seems to be at that level. The beer isn’t cheap and the shipping isn’t either but it’s certainly an interesting option for finding obscure beers.  I’ve just placed my first order and am eagerly awaiting the delivery.  I’ll let you know how it turns out. They also have  beer of the month clubs that will ship you 12 beers from a region of your choice. They have a better selection than most of these but I think they charge too much for this service.  They’re monthly price is high and then they charge shipping.  I know a couple of other clubs that don’t charge shipping.  Check out Great Clubs and Flying Noodle. The former I have tried and can recommend the latter I have not tried yet but it looks interesting.

Hogs and Beer

I recently had an opportunity to spend some time in northwest Arkansa. OK, in reality I didn’t have any choice because I was working. It’s not really that bad though. A little slow and not much to do but there are bright spots. One diversion was the HogHaus Brewing Company in Fayetteville. After having a little trouble finding it because the location in my GPS was slightly off, I found a place to park. I believe that on a Friday or Saturday night you would need to get there early to find a parking place anywhere close to this place. Fayetteville is a college town and Hoghaus is located in an area that contains a lot of bars and eatery’s that appear to cater to the college crowd. Despite not really being all that busy I waited a while to be seated. The people in front of me said they had waited a while also. I actually gave up and sat at the bar. Not that I mind sitting at the bar but they weren’t that busy and I never actually saw a host or hostess. I mention this only becasue I try to give you the full experience of the places I visit. And on that same note, the decor was interesting and comfortable. The food was good although I had a BBQ Chicken Pizza which is hard to mess up, although I have seen it done. The prices seemed a little high and a couple of people I spoke to later about this place said the same thing.

OK, now to the important part, their beer. I had the sampler, like I always do. It was reasonably priced and a good selection of beers. Apparently they have several seasonals that rotate in and out backed up by a large set of year round beers. So all and all a good selection. Unfortunately I found the beers, while drinkable, uninspired and in some cases difficult to identify as to type. I really had a hard time deciding what I wanted to try a pint of. I went with one of the wheat’s which seemed to be what they did best. They actually had a Belgian that wasn’t bad and a fruit wheat (although I forget what the fruit was) that was very tasty. It was just the wrong time of year for wheats for me and I would’ve preferred a good brown or amber. But, you can’t always get what you want.

Overall my experience was not unpleasant. The bartender was attentive and friendly and I struck up a conversation with a couple of guys at the bar who were interesting. Bear in mind that as I’ve said before, these are just my opinions and your experience may differ. If you’re ever in the area check this place out for yourself and see what you think.

I know many of you are saying ‘Where did he get that cool logo at the top of the page?’. It was created for me by a talented young lady named Emily Spence who does excellent graphic design. You can check out some of her other work at LemonBox Design . If you have graphic design needs I’m sure she can help you out.

Please feel free to comment on any of my posts and by all means tell me about any brewpubs you find that are worth checking out. Also keep me posted on any new beers you find that might be of interest.

The Leine Forms to the Right

I first experienced Leinenkugels beer in Minneapolis. It was several years ago and I really can’t say which of their beers it was. I remember I enjoyed it but not much else. I’ve had a few Leine’s since then, but not many. It just hasn’t been available. Recently I’ve I’ve found two of their beers locally. The Fireside Nut Brown and the 1888 Bock, both of which are seasonals. I enjoyed both of them very much, unfortunately I only had one of the Nut Browns and it is now past it’s season. The Bock has just become available so I expect to have more. At least 5 anyway. It’s been long enough since I had the NB that I can’t give you a decent description. Suffice it to say, I enjoyed it enough to look for more. The Bock was exactly what I like in a beer, flavorful without being overpowering. It reminded me of some of the other Bocks I’ve had and I’ve enjoyed pretty much all of them. I suggest you try both these beers at your earliest opportunity. Unfortunately you’ll have to wait until November to try the FNB. The Bock should be available through March so look around for it.

A new brewpub has opened up in Chattanooga recently. ‘The Terminal’ is downtown next to the Choo-Choo in an old building that they’ve done a very nice job of refurbishing. I’d like to say I love this place, it’s food and it’s beer. Unfortunately I can’t do that. Their food is mediocre and the beer is about the same. I really can’t say anything bad about their beer but I can’t say anything good either. I’ve been there twice with hopes of improvement. I continue to hope and I will go back just because I want to support a place so convenient to where I live. The atmosphere at least, is very pleasant. The downstairs is a little noisy but the upstairs is quieter and very nice. If you live in the area check this place out

Beer on Both Coasts

Since my last post I’ve been to New York City (said with same emphasis as the Pace Picante commercial) and Sacramento, I was able to visit brewpubs in both cities. One in NYC and four in Sacramento. Overall that makes them successful trips even though there was work involved. Before I talk about them though I’d like to refer back to my last post. I, or rather my spouse found Bluemoon’s Rising Moon Ale, which is an amber Wheat with Lime and Lime peel added. I can know report that I enjoyed it very much. It’s crisp, refreshing, and light. The Lime taste is very slight and does not overwhelm. Try it if its’ available near you.

Also in response to the comment from Greg on my last post, I had forgotten but occasionally I get a bad Bluemoon White. I’m not sure what happens to it but it just isn’t what it should be. It’s only happened a couple of times but one was this week. For some reason the beer takes on an orange cast and actually tastes a little like orangeade, not a good thing for a beer. I know they put orange peel in it but I think sometimes they get carried away.

Now on to my brewpub expereinces. Heartland Brewery has 5 locations in the NYC area. I managed to get to 2 of them. Both places are similar so convenience is the only consideration for picking a locale. The beer at Heartland is definitely drinkable. They’ve won some awards in the past but nothing recently and in my humble opinion that’s because they’ve gone for mass appeal instead of sticking to the strict qualities of the beer types. Everything they have is recognizable for what they call it but is not exactly on the mark for the beer type. The stout was closer to being a porter and so on. Service was very good, food was great, and the atmosphere was pleasant.

While in Sacramento I went to Rubicon Brewing, Hoppy Brewing, Pyramid Alehouse Brewery, and Sacramento Brewing. Each had it’s own traits and all were worth the visit.

Rubicon is more like a neighborhood bar than anything else and I suspect that’s because that’s really what it is. It just happens to make it’s own beer. It’s in a small residential area just out of downtown and obviously had a lot of loyal regulars. The beers were good, food was good and service was very good. As I already said, atmosphere was basically neighborhood bar.

Hoppy Brewing is a more traditional brewpub that lives up to it’s name. Most of their beers are a bit on the hoppy side for my taste. Their IPA will cause your face to go into a permanent scrunch. But hey, some people like that. The service was pretty good, food was good and the atmosphere was what you would expect, brewpub like.

Pyramid Alehouse is a larger chain like brewpub. It’s really more like a large brewey that has restaurants. Reminds me a lot of Big River. They have 5 locations on the west coast and are worth a visit. They make a nice Hefeweizen and an Amber I really enjoyed. In the summer I think their Apricot Ale would be very refreshing. The food was very good, service was excellent, and the atmosphere was big restaurant like, but not bad.

As for Sacramento Brewing I went to their Oasis location which has since been closed so I’m hesitant to talk about it. I haven’t been to the other location and don’t know anything about it. They area little unique in that they have a beer menu outside of their own brews. I will definitely check out their other location next time I’m in the Sacramento area.

Some of you may ask ‘How does he manage to taste all the beers in a brewpub in one visit?’. The secret is , samplers, most of these places will give you 4-5 OZ samples sometimes in a group, sometimes individually. It helps if you have somebody else with you so you don’t have drink all of each one. I usually pick my favorite and have a pint of that with my meal. If they have half pints I might try two.

The Moon Rises

I tried a new beer the other day. It was a pale ale and as a rule I’m not a huge fan of pale ales. There are a few I like though and this one will be added to that list. As far as I can tell it’s the latest from Blue Moon Brewing. Many of you are probably aware that they make an excellent Belgian White that I’ve enjoyed for a while. They also have begun making a few other craft beers, a pumpkin ale, Harvest Moon; a winter ale, Full Moon; a summer ale, Honeymoon; and a spring ale, Rising Moon. I haven’t tried Rising Moon but will be looking for it this spring. I found Rising Moon on the website when researching for this blog and that’s the first I’ve seen of it. I did not find the Pale Moon on the website so I assume it is very new.

Back to my original topic, the pale ale. It’s very smooth with an even flavor that does not leave you wanting. They’ve succeeded in producing a pale ale that has flavor while not being overly hoppy. I’m just not a fan of hops. It has it’s place but should never be the dominant flavor in a beer. In my humble opinion anyway.

If you have a chance, check this one out and let me know what you think. Try Harvest Moon if you haven’t. If you like pumpkin ales its worth giving a taste. The first time ever tried Honeymoon was at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver 2 or 3 years ago. They were calling it there ‘experimental’ beer. I liked and I think what I tried there was better than what they’re bottling. That could be just my memory though. If anybody has tried Rising Moon I’d be interested to hear your opinion.

Just a closing note, is everybody aware that Blue Moon is owned by Coors? Some of the smaller craft beer breweries are being taken over by the big names. Hopefully they’ll do like Coors and leave the recipes alone. I imagine being owned by Coors has been what’s allowed Blue Moon to expand and come out with new beers. So that’s a good thing.

I Start To BLOG About Beer

After years of talking about it I’ve finally decided to blog about my favorite subject, BEER! I love beer, and that’s not to say I drink a lot of it. I prefer quality over quantity. I’ll usually drink a couple at a time and I’m always looking for something new. I travel quite a bit for my job which allows me to visit brewpubs in different cities as well as try the regional brews.

My intent for this Blog is to talk about the beers I’ve tried and new ones as I find them. Also I’ll be rating the brewpubs I visit. I’ll talk about the food and service as well as the beer. I understand that everybody’s taste’s are different and those reading this may not agree with everything I say but if you read regularly you may be able to get a feel for how your tastes differ from mine. That’ll hopefully allow you to know a little about a beer or brewpub and decide if you want to try it.

Just to give you an idea of my tastes, I like medium dark beers best. Reds, Browns, Ambers, Bocks and brews of that nature. Most of the beers I like are ales; there’s something about Lagers I don’t usually care for. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some I like though. I try to be open minded. I also like Wheat beers in the summer, even the really fruity ones. Hefeweisens are excellent but a plain old Wit is good too.

Some of my favorite beers are Shinerbock, Smithwicks and Michael Shea’s Irish Amber. I also love Guinness, especially fresh Guinness. It may be psychological but I believe Guinness at the brewery is the best I’ve ever tasted but Guinness anywhere in Ireland just seems better than in the States. I’ve been there twice and hope to go back.

My favorite Brewpub is Tommyknocker Brewing in Idaho Springs, Co. They don’t make a bad beer, the food is good and the service is usually good. I have a friend who would disagree with that last statement but that’s a long story. I prefer small brewpubs to the big chains. They have more ambiance and the beers are more interesting. Another of my favorites is in Mineral Springs, WI. It’s a tiny place called Brewery Creek. Good beers and a nice little place. They have a B & B if you’re into that kind of thing.

OK, that’s enough for now. I hope you’ll find some useful information here occasionally. Come back often and feel free to comment.
